The Role of the School Board

Board members are the overseeing body of the schools. Their responsibility as elected officials is to represent the student needs and the resident taxpayer. School board members need to ask questions, make inquiries and direct the superintendent and treasurer in carrying out the wishes of the public. The superintendent and treasurer handle all day to day operations.

It is the board’s responsibility to make sure that our students are getting the best education possible at the best possible price. Sometimes boards have taken the easy way out by throwing money at a situation and asking for increased levy’s rather than making the difficult choices by asking questions and seeking other methods.

If the board just lets the administration take over, then those members on the board are not doing the job as the representative of the public in carrying out their wishes.

North Royalton Homedays Parade

It was great to see everyone at the North Royalton Homedays parade!

Response from the Board President to my policy recommendations

These policies were presented to every board member and the administration one of my last work sessions before leaving the board.  Try to find them in either the November 12, 2009 or the December 10, 2009 meetings.

It is my understanding that there was no board discussion in answering these policy requests. In addition Board members had no conversation with the Board Attorney nor did any board member receive any documents from any other districts regarding the answers given. The question that begs to be asked is why should we be compared to what other districts do, when we are North Royalton and know whats best for our own community.

Policies I fought for when I was on the board from 2005-2009

Below is a list of all the policies that I fought for to get the rest of the board to adopt when I was on the board. However, the board leadership was dead against all of these policies and would not allow for even a vote into these issues. Before leaving office in 2009 I shared these recommendations with the board and its' newest member Dan Langshaw before leaving office in hopes that someone would have the courage to address these issues through creating policies. Mr. Langshaw to his credit has tried to bring about positive policies changes to address these issues. But looking at past board minutes and attending board meetings it is clear that even he has faced the same opposition in getting the board to vote on approving policies that call for increased transparency, accountability, and opening the board to the entire community. Why is the board leadership so opposed to these recommended policies that they have hidden it even from the minutes that are posted online at www.northroyaltonsd.org
